Air New Zealand is New Zealand's flag carrier and one of the largest airlines in the South Pacific. The airline serves around 12.5 million passengers annually and its extensive flight route includes destinations in Asia, Europe, North America and Australia. Air New Zealand was founded in 1940 when it was set up as Tasman Empire Airways Limited. During the airline's early years, it was simply a sea plane company operating solely around New Zealand. The airline was taken over by the Government of New Zealand in 1965, whereupon it was renamed Air New Zealand. In 1999 the Airline joined the Star Alliance allowing the it to connect to destinations around the world. Air New Zealand's partnership in the Star Alliance allows passengers to collect frequent flyer miles from other participating airlines as well. The entire airline's fleet interiors have recently been renovated and a new premium economy section was introduced, allowing for an intermediate class between economy class and the business premier class.

Each economy class passenger on an Air New Zealand flight is allowed one piece of hand luggage, in addition to a purse, small laptop bag or duty-free bag. Carry-on luggage must not weigh more than 7kg and should be no larger than 57cm x 37cm x 24cm, though garment bags are also allowed and may be up to 60cm x 11cm x 140cm in size.
