Malaysian airline AirAsia is the biggest low cost carrier in Asia and supports regular flight service to around 65 destinations across the Asian continent. Since starting life in 1993 as part of a government owned company and launching flight operations in 1996, AirAsia has experienced rapid expansion to today confirm its position as the leading low cost airline in Asia. Following a period of financial difficulties the airline was purchased by Tony Fernandes in 2001. A reorganisation of the business model led to financial improvement, enabling the route network and fleet to be expanded and modernised. From the central hub in Kuala Lumpur, AirAsia connects Malaysia to the rest of the continent. Sister airline AirAsia X offers international flights to a range of worldwide destinations including London and Melbourne with plans to develop the route network to add further global centres. In 2010 the airline was able to offer the cheapest flights in the world measured by cost per kilometer for each seat. Based on strong financial performance and a reputation for high quality customer service and rapid turnaround times, the future promises to be bright for AirAsia.

Baggage regulations for flights with AirAsia

Special luggage items

AirAsia allow sporting equipment and other such unusual pieces of checked baggage to be carried on board the flight, subject to a fee dependent on the destination. Fragile items such as musical instruments are usually required to be carried on board the flight by purchasing an adjacent seat, as long as the item does not exceed the maximum weight allowance of 75kg.

Checked luggage

AirAsia do not provide any free allowance for checked baggage, all of which incurs an extra charge. The initial maximum weight allowance for such baggage is 15kg, and the baggage fee is discounted if purchased at least 4 hours prior to departure. Additional checked baggage weight allowance can be purchased in further increments of 5kg each, but any passenger checking in baggage which exceeds the amount purchased is charged a much higher excess baggage fee. Any individual item must not exceed 32kg or have dimensions of more than 81cm in height, 119cm in width and 119cm in depth.

Hand luggage

The regulations for unchecked hand luggage can be found in AirAsia's terms and conditions, specifically in section 8.6. On all flights, a maximum of two items of hand luggage are permitted, with each having a maximum weight of 7kg. In addition, both items of hand luggage must not exceed the required dimensions of 56 cm x 36 cm x 23 cm. AirAsia also state that any liquids brought on board must be kept in transparent containers of no more than 100ml, and must fit into a re-sealable plastic bag of no more than 1 litre in capacity.
