Alitalia was originally founded in 1946 as Alitalia-Linee Aeree Italiane, but has undergone major changes in the past few years. In 2008, the airline went bankrupt and was purchased by a group of Italian entrepreneurs and merged with AirOne Airlines, another one of the largest Italian air carriers. Air France-KLM also has also taken partial ownership of Alitalia. Since its restructuring, the airline has slowly begun to experience renewed financial stability. Despite past financial problems, the airline remains the largest flight provider in Italy. Today Alitalia offers flights to 25 domestic and over 40 international destinations throughout the world. The airline also has an impressively large and diverse fleet with 149 aircraft. The airline is part of the SkyTeam alliance and offers its own frequent flyer program, Milemiglia. In addition to the Milemiglia frequent flyer program, passengers can also earn miles from other participating SkyTeam airlines.

Environmental impact of Alitalia

Alitalia is committed to the environment. The company has many policies which it uses to promote sustainable development and reduce its carbon footprint. The airline has a strong process of fleet renewal, ensuring that they are always using the most ecologically friendly airplanes available, and with the lowest CO2 emissions. Alitalia tries to reduce the noise levels of their airplanes, and claims they have one of the least noisy carriers in the EU. An agreement with Suchem supplies the company with renewable bio-fuels. Alitalia is also supporting various initiatives by the Italian Environment Ministry to raise awareness of Italian national parks and other ecological landmarks.

Fuel Efficiency and CO2 Emissions

Alitalia places great focus on their fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions. The company has initiated various fuel efficiency initiatives to reduce and manage their use of fuel. Since 2011 the company has established a fuel and energy resources management department which has already saved the company 24.000 tons of fuel, and has reduced their carbon footprint by 75.000 tons. The airline has reduced the weight on board, increased the efficiency of their engines and has achieved aerodynamic improvements. The company has paired itself with the European Commission to reduce their impact on the environment, and to ensure a proper energy resources management.

Airline Energy Efficiency Class - Alitalia

Atmosfair gGmbH, a German NGO, analyzes all of the impacts airlines make on the environment and gives each airline a rank. The ranking of airlines is executed by giving each company a letter symbolizing their environmental impact, and the rank goes from A (highest and best) to F (lowest and worst). Alitalia has a score of 60,7, or D, which is a rather low assessment. This means Atmosfair has analyzed the company and has concluded that Alitalia can improve their environmental policy, that is, if they wish to lower their environmental impact and carbon footprint and promote sustainable development.
