Environmental impact of All Nippon Airways

All Nippon Airways has responded to global concern about the energy resources management of the aviation industry by upgrading planes and changing some routes including new direct flights from America to Japan. Within Japan the airline has started to fly the Dreamliner on short haul flights and recently took delivery of ten Airbus 320's universally considered to be less damaging to the environment than older aircraft. The lighter construction and improved dynamics of these aircraft allow for greater fuel efficiency. This reduces emissions of CO2 and other pollutants lowering the carbon footprint and the impact on the environment.

All Nippon Airways Develops System of E-Flights

In 2006 the airline developed a scheme of 'e-flights' to promote an awareness of energy resources management and sustainable development amongst passengers. Light and recyclable flight items such as cups and bottles were specially designed and introduced and travelers were encouraged to carry less luggage with the aim of reducing weight in the cabin. Lighter aircraft result in greater fuel efficiency. A voluntary carbon footprint offset program was established to balance emissions of CO2. In 2013 All Nippon Airways began the first direct long-haul flights between San Fransisco and Japan to reduce the impact on the environment.

All Nippon Airways Rand 25 by Atmosfair

Universal concern about the carbon footprint and effect on the environment of the aviation industry has motivated research by Atmosfair gGmbH. Taking different factors such as optimum fuel load, cruising speed, CO2 emissions and altitude on different routes Atmosfair has established a system for ranking airlines according to their effect on the environment. Each airline is awarded with points and is assessed on a class system of energy efficiency from A to F. In 2012 All Nippon Airlines gained the rank of 25, a classification of C and was awarded 70.9 points.
