The climate in Amsterdam can be variable. Winters are usually cold and damp, although heavy snow and extreme temperatures are rare as the city is surrounded by water on three sides. Summer in the city is warm, even hot at times, but rain showers are never too far away to take the edge off things and thanks to the generally mild climate, Amsterdam is perfect for a city break all year round (although it is advisable to keep an umbrella handy, particularly over autumn and winter).

Like most European cities, Amsterdam has its fair share of designer boutiques and famous brand stores, but by far the best way to indulge in some retail therapy is to spend a day wandering through one of the open air markets situated around the city. The most famous market is the Albert Cuyp Markt, but there are many other open air markets featuring stalls laden with delicious food, vintage clothing, second hand books, art and antiques, and eclectic collections of miscellaneous junk.

Amsterdam may not be the most obvious destination for food-lovers, but there are enough fine restaurants and Dutch delicacies to tempt even the most discerning of palates. The region is famous for its cheeses, so be sure to buy some local kaas. Waffles and pancakes are another local specialty worth tasting and delicious waffles can be bought at outlets all over the city. And after a raucous night on the tiles, nothing beats a portion of freshly fried frites dipped in mayonnaise.

Amsterdam is perhaps best known for the risqué attractions of its infamous red light district, but although the red light district is undoubtedly worth a visit, if only for curiosity’s sake, the city has far more to offer than tawdry sex clubs and strippers. Indeed, once darkness falls, the theatres, restaurants, nightclubs, bars and coffee shops in Rembrandtplein Square and Leidseplein Square are soon packed to the rafters with a lively mixture of locals and tourists enjoying the city’s fabulous nightlife.
