Summer in Athens is dry and sees hot afternoons and cool evenings. Rainfall is generally experienced during the winter months, yet the sun still makes its appearance regularly enough for visitors to enjoy the beaches late into Autumn. Snowfalls on the surrounding mountains are not uncommon. It is advisable for visitors to have a pair of comfortable, rubber-soled walking shoes during winter visits as many popular tourist sites have marble surfaced floors which could become quite hazardous when wet.

Greece's current economic crisis does have advantages for shoppers in that goods are being offered at far cheaper prices. With all streets in central Athens now being closed to traffic, the city has truly become a shopper's paradise. An enviable number of shops are found in this area which stock excellent quality clothing and footwear. Both here and in the well- known Plaka and Monastiraki downtown districts every conceivable item, and even a few thought inconceivable, can be found.

Greeks love long, leisurely meals enjoyed outdoors whenever possible, and restaurants encourage visitors to do the same. Most reputable establishments will invite customers to see what is on offer in the kitchen and make their selection, which will then be freshly prepared. Lamb, chicken and fish dishes taste as good as they sound. Dolmades are grape leaves stuffed with rice and ground beef and are always on the menu. Vegetables are usually roasted and favourites are courgette, aubergine, potatoes and garlic. International cuisine is available everywhere in Athens.

Athens offers night-time entertainment befitting of a city that ranks among the most visited in the world. Pubs and clubs cater to every taste in music, and nights spent in music bars like the Afaneis in Psirri are guaranteed to be festive. If seeing the city at night appeals, then visitors can take an evening tour, which includes viewing the beautifully illuminated Acropolis before visiting the old city of Plaka to dine at a traditional Greek tavern.
