Barcelona has a pleasant climate year round, with average high temperatures in the late twenties Celsius in summer and average low temperatures around five degrees Celsius in winter. July and August can be humid. Wintry days are often sunny even when cold, and early summer and autumn are popular times to visit. April can be quite wet with most rainfall occurring in this month.


This stylish city has its fair share of fashion boutiques, department stores, interior design stores and other shops. Shopping centres include Bulevard Rosa and El Corte Inglés, both centrally located and easy to access. Some shops close for a couple of hours in the afternoon.


Typical dishes of the region include traditional paella as well as lesser known dishes such as arrós negre, squid in black ink with rice and peas, botifarra amb seques, fried sausages with white beans, and bunyols de bacalla, salt cod fritters. Barcelona has some great tapas bars where traditional dishes can be tried in bite size portions, while bistros such as Gresca and La Pubilla are long favourites. Top restaurants include the sleek ABaC, the contemporary Catalan Cinc Sentits, and the Mediterranean-Asian Koy Shunka.


Barcelona is a city that knows how to party, and with several different neighbourhoods offering everything from tapas bars and Irish pubs to swanky cocktail bars and boat parties, there is are plenty of choices for the visitor. Las Ramblas in the Old Town gets busy at night, when street performers, cocktail bars and restaurants set the scene. The nearby Gothic Quarter has some hot clubs such as Jamboree and Tarantos, while Passeig del Born is home to popular bars like Miramelindo and bohemian Raval features an array of hip cocktail bars.
