British Midland Airways (BMI) was founded in 1949 as Derby Aviation Limited and is one of the oldest still operating airlines in the UK. The airline's main hub is London Heathrow Airport, where currently 14% of all BMI flights either depart or arrive. BMI has received numerous awards throughout its history for best regional airline in Great Britain. In the 1970s, the airline began to expand, purchasing new aircraft and adding new destinations to its flight plan, including many new international destinations. The German company Lufthansa took over the majority of the company in 2008 and BMI has since been a subsidiary company. BMI is a member of the Star Alliance, giving passengers connections to over 900 destinations worldwide. BMI focuses its flight plan mainly on domestic flights, as well as intentional destinations throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa. BMI offers its frequent flyers the popular Diamond Club, giving passengers the opportunity to collect miles and enjoy other benefits, such as exclusive lounges at Heathrow International and priority boarding.
