Cologne is temperate all year. However, its peak tourism is during the traditional holiday time, May through September, when visitors are most likely to have sun and pleasant temperatures. Its warmest months are July and August, and its coldest are December and January. June gives the city its heaviest rainfall of the year. However, it has changeable weather, similar to the UK. Rain can appear suddenly in the middle of a sunny touristing day, and then disappear just as quickly.

Cologne’s most popular shopping districts are Hohe Strasse and Schildergasse. Here, visitors can find familiar favourites, bargains, and designer labels. Schildergasse is the most popular shopping district in Germany. The city’s Belgian Quarter, featuring streets named after cities in Belgium, is known for its off-beat shopping scene. A less known tourist tip is to shop the city’s 86 individual quarters, known as vedeel to the locals, which offer various independent boutiques and a chance to meet the locals.

Cologne is known for its hearty food. Some of the traditional foods are Halver Hahn, a cheese sandwich on rye; Fronz, black pudding from Rhineland; and Soorbrode, a meat joint marinated in vinegar and raisins. Soorbrode is normally served with cabbage and dumplings. These dishes are typically served in brewhouses. The city also offers numerous restaurants, as well as snack bars and fast-food chains. Popular snack foods in Cologne are currywurst, sliced pork sausages with curry sauce; and reibekuchen, potato fritters from Rhineland.

Nightlife in Cologne is situated around clubs and brewhouses, the equivalent to British pubs. The city has more pubs per capita than any other in Germany. The popular local beer is kölsch. As kölsch is also the name of the local dialect, it is often joked that kölsch is the only language one can drink. The main clubbing area is centred around Zülpicher Strasse and Luxemburger Strasse. Zülpicher Strasse also has its own Latin Quarter, which is popular with students.
