Rain falls throughout the year in Copenhagen and visitors are advised to pack a raincoat. Both summer and winter temperatures are mild, and there are no great fluctuations between day and night time temperatures. But, with Denmark being almost entirely surrounded by ocean, winds come up unexpectedly and often signal a sudden temperature change. The close proximity to beaches makes this city a favourite amongst tourists and the warm temperatures between May and September make it the best time to visit.

Copenhagen observes the Danish rule that restricts Sunday shopping to bakeries, florists and souvenir shops, but department stores and malls do stay open longer for the rest of the week. The largest of these stores, Det Ny Ilum and Magasin du Nord, are in the centre of the city. Denmark is famous for Lego and souvenir sets can be found both in these stores and at the very popular flea markets dotted around the city in the summer months.

Rye bread is a staple Danish food and the delicious open sandwiches that are traditional lunchtime fare are available anywhere in Copenhagen. Dinners will almost always include potatoes accompanied by frikadeller the meatballs which the Danes love. Roast pork with crackling cannot be bettered anywhere in the world. Another favourite is poached cod served with a mustard sauce and fresh vegetables. The innovative spirit of Danish chefs has seen a rapid rise in the number of restaurants being awarded Michelin stars.

Copenhagen really comes alive at night sporting a diverse range of clubs, pubs, theatres and live entertainment. Tivoli is a venue that has almost everything under one roof including fairground type amusements. Rosie McGee’s with its retractable roof makes dancing under the stars a memorable experience, while Club Mambo/Sabor Latino is so keen to have everyone salsa the night away it offers lessons to those who can’t. The city often hosts big-name concerts which are worth checking out.
