A city break in Dusseldorf can be taken at any time of the year, although the carnival weekend in November is always very popular. Most tourists visit between May and September, when there is a good deal of sunshine, and average daytime temperatures are around 23 degrees. In winter it is much colder, with occasional snow, which often adds to the atmosphere of the city.

Dusseldorf has a reputation for elite shopping, selling luxury goods at a premium price! The Ko Gallerie arcade, on the eastern side of the Konigsallee, is the most exclusive, with other high-end shops nearby. For more affordable prices, the Shadowstrasse is a much-visited shopping area. There are also many street and flea markets. Local souvenirs are the Mostert, and Killepitsch, a liqueur with 40% proof.

The Dusseldorf cuisine consists of hearty traditional food. Popular dishes include Himmel und Ad (Heaven and Earth), a dark sausage mixed with stewed apples, served with mashed potatoes, and Sauerbraten, which is a stew with marinated beef, raisins and gravy. Rhine mussels are also a local delicacy, and for those with a sweet tooth, there are many kinds of cake. A world-famous variety of mustard, called Mostert, is made here, and is used in many dishes, including topping grilled steaks in Dussedorfer Senfrostbraten.

Although traditionally seen as a business city, Dusseldorf is becoming increasingly popular as a destination for a lively city break. Situated on the banks of the Rhine, the Alstadt (old town) area, with its cobbled streets and historic churches, contrasts with the ultra-modern architecture of the business area. The city offers a wide range of nightlife, including classical music at the Tonhalle Dusseldorf, opera and ballet at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, and even puppet shows at the Puppentheater an der Helmholzstrasse. The Alstadt is home to the famous Bolkerstrasse, where many different bars and clubs are to be found, and the Bilk Quarter also has discos, clubs and restaurants.
