Located on the east coast, Edinburgh has a relatively dry and sunny climate compared with the west and northern regions of Scotland. Summer brings several mild to warm sunny days, with average high temperatures of around 19 degrees Celsius, while spring and autumn can be crisp with blue skies. Winter can be a magical time to visit the city, with cold frosty skies and snow laden cobbled streets providing the backdrop for festival lights.

The city’s main shopping thoroughfare, Princes Street, has a good range of high street shops including House of Fraser and Marks & Spencer to its north side while the south side drops away to green parks and views of the castle and Old Town. Running parallel is George Street, which features many upmarket shops, while in Leith is Ocean View, the city’s largest shopping centre. Beautiful Victoria Street is a great place for browsing interesting independent crafts shops in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh has a superb range of restaurants, with everything from seafood to curries and traditional Scottish fare on offer. Seafood lovers should head to The Shore in Leith, where there are several excellent quality restaurants such as The Ship on the Shore. High end restaurants include the iconic Witchery, located at the top of the Royal Mile and offering exceptional dining in its idyllic setting. Well loved amongst locals is the Mosque Kitchen which serves up super portions of wholesome curry at decent prices.

Edinburgh has a vibrant nightlife, with many pubs and bars offering live entertainment and several subterranean nightclubs in the vaults and caves of the Old Town. The lively and picturesque Grassmarket is a popular destination, overlooked by the castle and featuring well-loved pubs such as the Beehive Inn, Last Drop Tavern and White Hart Inn. Nearby the renowned Sandy Bells is one of the city’s top spots for folk music. There is a great comedy scene with clubs such as The Stand and Jongleurs.
