Inside the city, Hamburg hosts one of the most prominent operas in the world and its philharmonic symphony is also world renowned.

The climate of Hamburg is oceanic. Summers are mild to pleasantly warm, with average high temperatures in the low twenties Celsius and July the warmest month. Most people visit between May and September. Spring and autumn temperatures can be brisk. Winter temperatures can sometimes drop below freezing, with February the coldest month, but snowfall is relatively rare due to the city's coastal position.


Good places to head for shopping are Europapassagen, the biggest mall in Hamburg, and Mönckebergstraße, one of the main shopping streets. Alsterarkaden is a charming riverside arcade in Italian Venetian style with several shops and cafes. For exclusive fashion, accessories and lifestyle, the Jungfernstieg mall and Neuer Wall are both popular. The Rathausmarkt, or City Hall Square, is a good place to pick up a souvenir, such as a traditional snow globe or beer mug.


Hamburg cuisine features a number of seafood dishes, such as finkenwerder scholle, pan fried plaice, and pannfisch, pan fried fish. Eels, herring and crab are all popular. Other typical dishes include birnen, bohnen und speck, a stew of pears, beans and bacon and labskaus, a corned beef, potato and beetroot dish. Frikadelle, a patty made with beef, stale bread, egg and seasonings may have given rise to the American hamburger. There are some superb restaurants, such as the Michelin starred Küchenwerkstatt and Piment, the Mediterranean Le Canard Nouveau, and Seven Seas, featuring international gourmet cuisine.


Lange Reihe and Grossneumarkt are good places to head for drinks. St Pauli, and especially Reeperbahn, is another popular area, with a variety of theatres, clubs and bars on offer, including the chic Bar Hamburg. The Schanzenviertel district is a bohemian area with funky bars and offbeat cafes for those looking for something a little different. Top clubs include Bar Rossi and Blankenese Kiez Internat, while for live music there is jazz at the Cotton Club, indie at Grosse Freiheit 36 and eclectic playlist at Prinzenbar. Classical music can be enjoyed at Laeiszhalle.
