Istanbul has a temperate climate which means that seasonal temperature changes happen subtly. Winters are moderately cold and wet with January being the coldest. Snowfalls are usual in winter, and ski resorts do good business. Summer temperatures peak in July and August at around 86dF and humidity is high. For visitors unaccustomed to heat, springtime is probably the most comfortable time weather wise and the city is far less crowded with tourists. The city is then also at its most beautiful.

Turkey is best known for carpets and leather goods, but the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is a feast for shoppers and offers that and so much more. Evil eye beads make great souvenirs or gifts for those back home. The Fatih district offers a huge weekly market where everything from food to clothes are expected to be haggled over. Visitors should note that it is only at these markets where bargaining is actively encouraged. It is not standard practice in other establishments.

Turkish cooks make full use of nature's gifts to produce tastes and aromas that delight the senses. Garlic, peppers and olive oil are used generously, and cheese also features strongly. Cheese and broccoli soup makes a delicious starter as does grape leaves stuffed with cheese and various other fillings. Lamb is a favourite meat and the many great restaurants in Istanbul do it full justice. Along with delicious steak and seafood dishes, the quality of food in this city makes selection a real dilemma.

Istanbul pulses with life, and its night time entertainment reflects a city that appreciates good living. Clubs are diverse and numerous. The Anjelique, on the shore of Bosphorus, has three storeys that house a restaurant with an amazing view and a trendy night club on the top floor. The music and cocktails are exceptional. Also by the Bosphorus is Reina. It is a place that encourages dancing and exotic cocktail sampling. There is a club to suit every musical taste.
