Although mid-summer days can reach temperatures of 86dF, the nights are comfortably warm and encourage outdoor dining and activity. Its proximity to the sea means that Lisbon experiences breezes that make those hot summer days far more pleasant. December and January are the coldest months although still averaging temperatures of around 57dF. Snowfalls occasionally occur, but rarely does the snow settle. It is an enviable climate that encourages tourism for most of the year.

Leather and intricately embroidered linen is probably what Portugal is most famous for, and known as the least expensive capital in Western Europe Lisbon offers many great bargains. Art and fashion is readily obtainable in the waterfront design district, and exquisite handmade gloves are sold in probably the smallest shop in the world. Luvaria Ulisses measures barely 3ft by 3ft, but is huge on quality and affordability. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for enthusiastic bargain hunters as this city is filled with them.

The Portuguese feast well on pork, rabbit, goat and quail among other favourites. Meals usually begin with a soup starter and these usually contain cabbage, potatoes and chourico, a spicy sausage. Bacalhau, or codfish, also forms a substantial part of traditional fare and is served roasted, stewed or chargrilled. Restaurants in the city take pride and pleasure in serving large quantities of perfectly prepared dishes, and for those who prefer alternatives many other cultures are represented.

For Lisbonites, weekends only begin when the sun sets. The Bairro Alto quarter in Lisbon is the hub of night time activity. It is home to numerous bars where fun seekers meet for drinks, music and happy socialising. When pubs close at around 2am, the action may shift to the docks of Alcantara and the Santos district's fashionable clubs. A co-owner of the renowned-for-design Lux club is actor John Malkovich, and drinks on this terrace end a perfect night of dancing.
