Malaysia Airlines is among the biggest Asian airlines with over 40 000 passengers carried every day. With an expanding fleet, the company is developing into one of the major world airlines. The main destination focus is in South and Southeast Asia, Australia and surrounding areas, although limited flights to North America and Europe are available. The company was founded in 1954 and adopted the current name in 1987. Ten years later, the airline offered the longest non-stop flight of the time, from Seattle to Kuala Lumpur. Today, the company has two subsidiary airlines, Firefly and MASWings which specialize in various areas to broaden the spectrum of flight offers available. From more than 100 destinations, several are located within North America and Europe such as Los Angeles, Frankfurt and London, while the main focus remains on Asian destinations. Codeshare agreements with Austrian Airlines, Air India and Gulf Air expand the flight network. Malaysia Airlines is one of very few airlines in the world to have received five stars from Skytrax for high quality. With Enrich and Grads (for young fliers), Malaysia Airlines has two bonus programs for regular customers.

Malaysia Airlines Enrich Frequent Flyer Program

An Enriching Malaysia Airline's Frequent Flyer Experience

Malaysia Airline's Enrich frequent flyer programme rewards its loyal passengers with a points system that may allow for free flights, seat upgrades, priority check-in and seating and many more attractive options including discounted shopping. It is a four tier system based on miles earned, and the higher the level, the more pampered the passenger. Partnerships with Air France, KLM, Northwest, and Delta Airlines broaden the potential for earning miles and all that is required to become a member is to register on the airline?s website. Four Tier Rewards The basic Blue level of Enrich already offers priority to its members in most aspects of airline travel. As more miles are accumulated, membership becomes more exclusive and rewards more extensive. Passengers whose jobs or lifestyles require extensive air travel and thus earn the 50,000 miles for Gold membership or the 450,000 miles necessary for Platinum will find the Enrich programme a welcome ally in eliminating any potential stress from either their departures or arrivals. Unlike those of other members, miles earned by the Platinum club elite do not expire and privileges extend to their spouses. Truly rewarding flying.

Musical instruments may be checked, and smaller instruments can also be taken as carry-on luggage if they do not exceed the corresponding restrictions. Sporting equipment is counted toward the free baggage allowance. If this allowance is exceeded, the normal fees for excess baggage apply.

Travellers in all fare classes may check up to two items of luggage. In First Class the combined baggage may weigh up to 40 kg, in Business Class up to 30kg and in Economy Class up to 20kg. The overall dimension of each item in First and Business Class may not exceed 158cm. In Economy Class, the sum of the overall dimensions must not exceed 269cm.

Environmental impact of Malaysia Airlines

In 2004 the energy resources management of Malaysia Airlines was evaluated by the International Standards Organization which works to help the aviation industry offset its carbon footprint. The airline wishes to counter the impact on the environment of its CO2 emissions and attained certificates 9001 and 14001. As part of sustainable development, Malaysia Airlines recently purchased an Airbus A330-200f which is widely acknowledged to have a smaller carbon footprint than older planes. These planes are light, feature fuel efficient engines and produce less CO2. The airline has made further savings by adopting continuous descent approaches when appropriate.

Carbon Footprint Offsetting by Malaysia Airlines

Malaysia Airlines has pledged to offset the carbon footprint of all their staff business flights, by contributing to UN approved schemes which preserve and maintain forests. Now customers are also being informed of the CO2 output of their travel and offered the opportunity to make an equivalent donation to a forest fund operated by The Forest Research Institute of Malaysia and Malaysia Airlines. The energy resources management at the airline has introduced a system of recycling at all its operational bases and acknowledges that sustainable development is good for business as well as the environment.

Atmosfair Award Malaysia Airlines 45.8 Energy Points

As a result of international concern about CO2 emissions and the resulting impact on the environment, the German NGO Atmosfair has devised a system of ranking airlines. This should encourage the aviation industry to ensure good energy resources management and introduce the latest initiatives on sustainable development. Collecting information on fuel burn and routes atmosfair gGmbH calculated energy points and produced a scale for each airline rank. In 2012 Malaysian Airlines was placed in class E on a scale of A to F for fuel efficiency. The airline received 45.8 points and was ranked at number 108.
