Mexicana Airlines is the largest Mexican airline and carries more passengers per year than any competitor. The primary Mexicana hub is Benito Juarez International Airport in Mexico City with secondary hubs in Cancun and Guadalajara. The airline was established in 1921 by two Americans living in Mexico. Initially, the company operated domestic flights between the capital and oil fields near Tampico. During the 1930s and 40s the airline gradually expanded both domestically and internationally to add to the short trip across the border to Texas launched in 1929. In 1960 Mexicana began to use jet aircraft and launched service to Los Angeles. The airline was privatised in 2005 after deregulation of Mexican airlines saw the creation of new competitors and low cost airlines. In 2009, Mexicana became a member of the oneworld alliance. The flight network focuses on Central, South and North America although services to Madrid and London are also offered. Focus cities Chicago and Los Angeles are joined by Toronto, Vancouver, Las Vegas and Washington D.C. along with several other North American cities, while Havana, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires are among the other international destinations. Frequent flyer program Mexicana Go offers benefits and upgrades for regular travellers.
