Milan has a Mediterranean climate which means that summer temperatures can soar to above 86dF, creating hot, sultry, 13 hour days. Rains are more likely to be of the thunderstorm or hailstorm variety, but are not all that frequent. The Alps do offer some protection from major circulations though. Winters can see temperatures dropping to below freezing and snow can be quite heavy. Spring and autumn are probably the best months to visit this vibrant, cultured and very beautiful city.

In general shopping in Milan is an expensive but exhilarating exercise. Being one of the fashion capitals of the world, the clothes on offer are stunningly stylish as are the accessories. Thankfully all but the largest stores close for a longish lunch every day and all day on Sunday. The Piazza Duomo is considered the fashion quarter and Corso Vercelli near Porta Magenta has some amazing shops. Navigli is a market centre where antiques and souvenirs can be found.

Polenta is a staple food of Italy and in Milan it is usually accompanied by sausages and ribs with a tomato sauce. Also typical to this city is rice and saffron which is served with ox marrow. Foods have a high calorie content, probably to help ward off the winter cold. Casseroles of pork and sausages with cabbage and onions are mouth-wateringly good served with whipped potatoes and most meals include delicious Italian breads with garlic or cheese toppings.

It is almost a ritual in Milan to walk down the central avenue to see who is out and where they are heading. This passegiata includes a visit to a pub or two with the same purpose. The city sports many trendy discos such as the Magazzini, where bouncers will generally decide who is let in. Coach tours are available to the Brera gallery and the Navigli area which are home to a host of pulsating night clubs.
