The area of France in which Nice is situated benefits from the mild weather of a Mediterranean climate - summer is dry and warm with plenty of sunshine. On average, only one or two days during summer will record any rainfall at all. Even in winter, days are mild and nights are cool rather than any really cold weather. Snowfall is such a rare occurrence in Nice that the inhabitants remember each one as an unusual event!

As the heart of the Riviera, Nice has everything a shopper could wish for. From chain stores and designer boutiques to street markets and antique shops, the city has something for any discerning shopper's taste. The central shopping area is Magenta Square and the streets surrouding it - pedestrianised roads and alleys have many chic shops to suit all pockets. Around the Old Cathedral sit plenty of studios where art and carved furniture can be purchased.

Food in Nice is often locally sourced, and therefore fish and other seafood is prevalent. Speciality local dishes include Pissaladière (a pie made with onions and anchovy sauce), Socca (pancakes made from chickpea flour) and Bouillabaise (a kind of fish soup). Restaurants in the area will also serve large amounts of bream, mullet and even sea urchins - a local saying reads "fish are born in the sea but die in oil" referring to the large amounts of olive oil used in local dishes.

Bars, pubs and clubs are plentiful in Nice, with many of the up-market and trendy. Non-dubbed art films are shown regularly at the Cinematheque de Nice, with more conventional films at the Cinema Rialto. Le Bar de Oiseaux is a bohemian place that serves food and drink and has live entertainment and cabaret, Le Smarties is a 70s disco heaven with buffet food, and Blue Moon is an R&B and house club with great drinks deals.
