Philippine Airlines is the national airline of the Philippines and is the oldest commercial airline in Asia which still operates under its original name. From two major hubs it services around 45 domestic and international destinations. From formation in 1941 to major downsizing following the Asian financial crisis in 1997 to recovery and expansion, Philippine Airlines boasts a rich and varied history. The first domestic flights were launched in 1941 before an expansion during the 1960s saw the introduction of long haul flights to North America and Europe. A fleet renovation was interrupted when the 1997 Asian financial crisis caused a major corporate and economic disaster and forced extensive downsizing. The airline temporarily ceased operations in 1998. In 2000, the company began making a profit again and has since expanded the fleet size and network. Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Vancouver and San Francisco are all supported by regular service while the primary focus of the the flight network is Asian destinations. Mabuhay Miles is the Philippine Airlines frequent flyer program which features various levels for loyal customers who can redeem points at face value for discounts, lounge access, priority check in and free flights.

Environmental impact of Philippine Airlines

Philippine Airlines operates from Ninoy Aquino International Airport and Mactan-Cebu International Airport and has to fight against stiff competition in the aviation market in the Philippines. The airline has been seeking to upgrade and expand their fleet and has placed an order for Airbus planes from the 320 and 330 series. The new planes will operate with greater fuel efficiency, cutting emissions of CO2 and other pollutants and lower the carbon footprint of Philippine Airlines. This is sensible energy resources management by the airline and with this choice it has taken action to support the environment.

New Planes Will Reduce Impact on the Environment

Philippine Airlines will use the Airbus 320 on some of their domestic routes and the wider 330 on international routes to Australia and within Asia. Delivery of the planes will start in 2013 and should result in significant fuel savings for the airline and allow sustainable development. This in turn reduces the levels of CO2 which are produced, lowering its impact on the environment and preventing a greater carbon footprint. Lighter construction and improved aerodynamics mean the Airbus 320 has the ability to carry twice as many paying passengers per mile per gallon of fuel than older planes such as the DC9.

Philippine Airlines Ranked by Atmosfair

In response to global concern about the impact on the environment of the aviation industry the German NGO Atmosfair had devised a system of ranking airlines. This facilitates a better understanding of the need for fuel efficiency in order to reduce CO2 levels and cut the carbon footprint of flying. Atmosfair gGmbH awards a class to each airline from A to F derived from its energy resources management and in 2012 Philippine Airlines was classed as D, received 61.4 points and was ranked at number 59.
