San Francisco has a generally mild to warm climate, with average summer highs around 20 to 25 degrees Celsius and average winter lows around 5 to 10 degrees Celsius. The city’s location, with water to three sides, is responsible for its typical cool winds and fog. The warmest month is generally September, and this is one of the best times of year to visit, though April and October are also known for their clear skies.


San Francisco has an array of shopping areas and malls. Union Square is home to department stores Macy’s and Saks, while nearby streets feature designer boutiques such as Louis Vuitton, Emporio Armani, Prada and Gucci. Charming Fillmore Street is the place to head for chic interior design and beauty, while Hayes Valley boasts contemporary interior design stores amongst wine bars and art galleries. Haight Street has an eclectic mix of vintage and music stores, while Mission Street has ethnic and vintage clothing alongside bakeries, florists and street cafes.


The cuisine on offer in San Francisco is equally diverse. The city has some superb seafood restaurants, many located around Fisherman’s Wharf, such as Scoma’s, one of the few restaurants with a licensed fish preparation station. Among the top restaurants in the city are the iconic Supperclub, offering a set four course menu amongst beautiful music and visuals, Coi, serving traditional Californian fare over at North Beach, the popular Japanese restaurant Ino Sushi and the effortlessly elegant French-Italian restaurant Quince.


San Francisco has a diverse and colourful nightlife, with everything from Irish pubs to upscale bars and sultry cabaret clubs. Nob Hill is an affluent area where many upmarket bars can be found, while SoMa is a popular area with many hot nightclubs along with restaurants and theatres. The Mission district is more targeted towards the alternative youth scene and is a great spot for bar hopping, while Fisherman’s Wharf is another popular place to while away the evening hours.
