As the national airline of Saudi Arabia, Saudi Airlines is the gateway to the country from around 75 global destinations. The airline ranks behind Emirates as the second largest in the region. Saudi Arabian Airlines was formed in 1946 as the national flag carrier and established a base in Jeddah which remains a major hub today. During the 1950s the company gradually expanded before becoming one of the first Arabic airlines to adopt the use of jets in 1962. In the 1970s and 80s international services were launched and the airline was renamed Saudia before a major redesign in the 1990s adopted the Saudi Arabian Airlines name. Today, the flight network covers around 75 cities around the world including New York City, Houston, Washington D.C. and London, Madrid, Frankfurt and Rome. A huge range of Asian and African destinations such as Dubai, Cairo, Johannesburg, Hong Kong and Delhi form the major focus of the flight network. Saudi Arabian Airlines has codeshare agreements with KLM, Air France and Etihad Airways and runs a frequent flyer program called Alfursan.

For example, in the first and business classes one bag not to exceed 115cm in size is allowed as well as a briefcase, no bigger than 100cm. In the guest class, only one carry-one piece is permitted as long as it doesn't exceed 115 cm and weighs less than 7kg. Environmental impact of Saudi Airlines

Saudi Arabian Airlines is part of Arab Air Carriers Organization and as such, follows AACO's environmental policies. The airline is focused on four objectives: Awareness, Policy, Solutions and Lobbying. The company raises awareness of increasing CO2 emissions by following up aviation developments, with the hope of reducing their carbon footprint. Saudi Arabian Airlines is committed to working with all interested parties to ensure a proper energy resource management and sustainable development. The company wishes to find proper solutions to decrease CO2 emissions and their impact on the environment. Lastly, the company wishes to lobby interested parties to ensure they comply with international laws and regulations.

Saudi Arabian Airlines Rejects EU Emission Rules

As part of a comprehensive package of reforms to promote sustainable development and energy resource management, the European Union has instituted emissions-trading rules. The rules were set unilaterally by the EU, outside of the normal UN channels. Because of this, Saudi Arabian Airlines believes the rules will be ineffectual in reducing the airline industry's carbon footprint. Most Arabian airlines, as well as the US, Canada, India, China and others, have rejected the EU's ruling. Most other countries and airlines support a global agreement against climate change, instead of the piecemeal approach practised by the EU.

Airlines Environment Impact Score and Class

The German NGO, Atmosfair gGmbH, does an airline ranking report, analysing each airline’s impact on the environment and comparing them to other companies. The report includes a numerical assessment, as well as assigning each airline to an efficiency class. The airline ranking of Saudi Arabian airlines is F, which puts the company on the 124th place. This is a rather bad assessment, indicating that the airline has a lot of room for improvement in reducing their CO2 emissions and their carbon footprint. It’s possible that the airline's reticence in accepting EU emissions trading is explained by their high carbon footprint.
