Environmental impact of TAM Airlines
Reducing the impact on the environment is given the highest priority by the energy resource management at TAM Linhas Aereas in their efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, carbon footprints, and contribute to a sustainable development of green aviation. Apart from purchasing modern aircraft types, and planning efficient seating capacity, the Brazil-based airline, TAM Linhas Aereas, is one of the pioneers in using biomass aviation fuel produced from the locally grown Jatropha oil. The first test flights using this vegetable biomass were successfully completed in 2010. The results were a huge contribution to the plans for a future large-scale production of this aviation bio fuel.
TAM Linhas Aereas pioneer in biomass fuel
TAM Linhas Aereas is taking a strong stance on sustainable aviation to reduce their CO2 emissions and carbon footprint to a minimum by closely monitoring the ratio of CO2 per passenger/kilometre. However, they are also working in collaboration with renewable energy projects and bio fuel producers to sponsor sustainable development and feasibility studies on the Jatropha-based bio fuel, which is considered to be the future of efficient, environment-friendly sustainable development in aviation. It is hoped that at least the use of this biomass could reduce the overall carbon footprint and environmental impact by up to 80% in comparison with conventional kerosene.
High position in Airline Rank
The German NGO atmososfair g GmbH has developed a standard airline rank to compare the efficiency of various airlines in short, medium, and long haul flights on the same routes. In 2012, TAM Linhas Aereas was classified as number 27 in the energy efficiency class C with a total of 70,1 efficiency points. The highest ranking airlines have modern equipment, high seating density, and maximum passenger occupancy and load utilisation, although the aircraft type, engine, and wings are also important factors for reducing CO2 emissions.
