The Romanian air carrier Tarom is one of the most important southeastern European airlines. In Romanian, Tarom is an acronym for Romanian air transport. Every year, Tarom carries in excess of 1.5 million passengers to more than 50 destinations in over 20 countries. As one of the fastest growing European airlines, the fleet is regularly upgraded and new routes and destinations are added to the network. In 1920, the air company CFRNA was founded and began operating air routes within Romania. In 1966 the first transatlantic flight was run and in 1974 a service to Sydney via Calcutta was introduced. Along with a range of European routes, flights to Africa and Asia are now offered as the airline focuses primarily on European travel. Following the collapse of communism in 1989, the airline was able to acquire western made planes and terminated unprofitable routes in the following years before delivering successful profits in 2004. The frequent flyer program Smart Miles is due to merge with the Air France scheme Flying Blue after joining the SkyTeam in 2010.
