US Airways is among the largest and most important airlines in the world. With a fleet of over 300 aircraft, US Airways carries around 70 million passengers each year. The airline was founded in 1939 under the name 'All-American-Airways' as a postal carrier, however various acquisitions led to expansion. In 2005 a merger with America West Airlines made the company the 5th biggest airline in the US. Since 2004, US has been a member of the Star Alliance. While the airline specialises in the USA with Mostly eastern destinations, international flights are offered to European and other worldwide centres. Following 9/11, US Airways declared itself bankrupt but was supported by government loans and exited bankruptcy in 2003, since when financial performance has improved. US Airways offers a frequent flyer program called Dividend Miles, for which points can be collected on all Star Alliance flights.

Environmental impact of US Airways

Operating in more than 200 cities worldwide, US Airways is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and providing a sustainable future through sound environmental policies. The airline employs an Environmental Green Team in order to improve its energy resources management and lessen its impact upon the environment by implementing new strategies in waste management, recycling and conservation of fuel. With the majority of its CO2 emissions coming from jet engine fuel, US Airways knows that more efficient fuel consumption is the key to lessening its carbon footprint. To achieve this, the airline is investing in new technologies and equipment as well as improving operational procedures.

Efficient resource management and a smaller carbon footprint.

US Airways sees upgrading its fleet as the surest means of reducing CO2 emissions. Accordingly, the airline has replaced many of its 737s with A321s, which are 20 percent more fuel efficient. Additionally, US Airways aims to cut fuel consumption and provide for sustainable growth by modifying aircrafts and implementing improved procedures both in the air and on the ground. By lightening aircraft loads and supporting new technologies such as the Next Generation ATC system, the airline reduces CO2 emissions and thus lessens its carbon footprint. US Airways is also researching sustainable alternative fuels both for its aircrafts and operations on the ground.

US Airways and its ranking with atmosfair gGmbH

The advent of the German carbon offsetting company atmosfair gGmbH allows customers to gauge an individual airline’s carbon footprint and help reduce global CO2 emissions by choosing with whom they fly. To encourage improved energy resources management and sustainable development, atmosfair rates airlines according to their carbon efficiency in transporting passengers and co-loaded freight between destinations. In 2012 US Airways achieved 67,3 efficiency points out of a possible 100 awarded by atmosfair. This earned the airline a C rating on a scale from A-F and an overall position of 38 out of 125 ranking airlines.
