Environmental impact of Volaris
In 2009 Volaris was awarded a certificate on a "System of Environmental Management" under the ISO 14001 norm awarded by NORMEX. To achieve this, the airline had to take steps to increase fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. In an effort to offset the carbon footprint of aircraft, the airline is involved in projects to protect the environment, for example, releasing turtles and cleaning beaches. Schemes to maintain forestland are central to the ecological program. At Toluca Airport in Mexico levels of CO2 and other pollutants are carefully monitored and Volaris is committed to analysing and restricting noise levels.
Volaris Establishes Voluntary Carbon Footprint Offset Programme
All customers at Volaris are given the option to make a payment of $4USD. This is donated by the airline to landowners in the Sierra Gorda Natural Reserve to encourage them to preserve the forest. This is an effort to balance the effect of the CO2 produced by the airline and prevent damage to the environment. In addition the airline seeks ways to avoid ground pollution and contamination by disposing chemicals according to latest industry standards. As part of good energy resources management Volaris is committed to reducing waste and all executives at the airline are actively involved in recycling.
German NGO Atmosfair Awards Volaris 61.3 for Energy Efficiency
In response to global concern about the impact on the environment of the aviation industry, Atmosfair gGmbH has established a system of ranking airlines separating them into different classes on a scale from A to F. This helps to encourage better resource managements and moves towards proper sustainable development. Using measures of fuel efficiency and methods to offset their carbon footprint Atmosfair awarded Volaris 61.3 points with a classification of D in 2012. The projects that the airline has undertaken, gave them a position of 61.
