How to Find the Best Travel Deals On the Web
Posted on: August 19th, 2008 by Gareth RobinsonMost of us do what our heads tells us to. Since our heads are stuck in televisions most days, and since our heads remember jangly little ditties, we tend to trust – for whatever silly reason – the people who sell to us with their advertisements. We tend to revert to those companies that spend truckloads of money trying to get our attention, but may or may not have the goods to back up their claims. By going for the advertisers, you may find some good deals, but remember you are paying for the advertisements, as well as the service.

Advertising….it’s good….
There are some general guidelines to help you find the best travel deals on the internet. Many of these guidelines would be applicable even in the olden days of yore when we picked up the phone book and darkened travel agents’ doorways. However, the internet has drastically changed how business – and certainly the big business of travel – is transacted. Here we’ll give some generally applicable advice to consider before and while shopping, as well as an overview of some of the best travel sites.
The first thing to understand when looking for valuable deals is that what you consider valuable may not be of value to your neighbour or even your significant other. So what you look for in a vacation may be completely different than what the Joneses down the street are looking for. You may, for instance, find it completely necessary to be closer to the beach than they were.

Some people think a Limo is important to pick them up
from the airport
Therefore, you are willing to pay more money for location than they were, even though both of your hotels are otherwise completely similar. Likewise, perhaps getting a limo ride from the airport is not such a concern in your world. If you are travelling with others, you may want to plan together and figure what is not negotiable. What can you not live without? What are you willing to compromise on? Start working around that. Communicate where you would like to go and when. If possible, let the children in on it too.
Build a network and keep an eye open for deals. Drop hints that you’re looking for special values on holiday packages. People will have their ears and eyes open for you. They may have heard about a great deal to Barbados, but they’re already making plans to go to Jamaica in the winter so they pass the information on to you at no extra charge. It’s amazing – people are genuinely helpful if you are on their good sides. Sometimes, a company is looking for someone to carry some goods (legal ones. don’t go for the illegal ones) overseas and through customs. They will pay most or all of your fare for the opportunity, all you need are the connections to allow you in. Facebook and Twitter are excellent (and fun) ways to build up and maintain your network.

You can find the best deals using Social Media
Be prepared for a layover. You may get stuck for a few hours in Des Moines (but grin an bear it), London, Chicago, Lubbock, New Delhi, Singapore, or Paris. There is nothing wrong with those cities, per se, but they are not where you intended to be. Additionally, you may not have the luxury to actually visit the town or even friends or relatives you may have there, the layover may complicate the timely arrival of your luggage (don’t we all wish that wasn’t an issue?), and most importantly, this layover will cut into the time that you will ultimately spend at your destination. But if you are fine with these distractions, then you may be able to save a lot of money.

Play your cards right on the internet and you can
avoid this sort of hotel.
The internet travel agents include Expedia.com, Travelocity.com, Orbitz.com Priceline.com, and SideStep.com. They offer substantial discounts, especially if you are going for a package deal. Each one has separate pages to navigate if you want a deal for plane, cruise, hotel, or a combination. Each one also promises you, the travelling customer, the best deals.
Travelocity guarantees customer satisfaction. They pledge to work with the travel providers to repair any problems that may arise during the trip and give you a phone number to speak to a representative. Expedia and sister sites like HotWire.com are comprehensive sites that emphasize not only the best present deals, but also have functions that allow you to plan your entire trip on the site. Orbitz includes tickets for rail and tickets for live events.

Whatever you want from a holiday, the internet can
get you the best deal
Priceline allows the customer to bargain for a deal. You set your price for a deal and if the travel servicers agree to your price, you can save yourself around forty percent off the standard fare. The drawback is that you enter your credit card before the actual bargaining and you must buy if your price is agreed upon.
SideStep’s main attraction is the “Buzz”. It informs you of some of the best travel deals departing from your area to other popular locales. It can be arranged to check for preferences in the top 25 most popular destinations or by price range. It also suggests advice articles from other travel-friendly websites in a rotating sidebar and lists some of the newest low fares also leaving from your region. Additionally, SideStep can be applied to your toolbar.
Price-checking allows you to gauge whether you have stumbled upon a good deal, a bad deal, or a deal too-good-to-be-true. Farecast.com and airfarewatchdog.com are internet companies that allow you to do this easily and comprehensively. Farecast will tell you about the best deals going around now and will make predictions on the likelihood of prices dropping or raising. Airfarewatchdog deals directly with the airlines and thus cuts out the middlemen. It has several email alerts so that you may choose the one(s) that best suit(s) you. It also features its own blog featuring airline-related news.
As you can see, there are many different ways to save by using the tools available to us on the internet. It makes the search quicker, easier, cheaper, and even fun. Enjoy hunting for deals on the web. Or, you can cut all the above out and go back to the main page and book your flight here.
