Hamburg

Hamburg Airport (airport code: HAM for IATA, EDDH for ICAO) is an international airport that is located 8.5 km northwest of Hamburg. It is the fifth biggest commercial airport in Germany.

The airport has four terminals. Terminal 1 is mainly for domestic and European flights. Terminals 2 and 3 both cater to domestic and international flights. Terminal 4 is built specifically for farther destinations that require longer trips. A shuttle bus that connects the four terminals as well as car park 6 goes around the circuit every 15 minutes.

Each of the four terminals has restaurants, bars, and shops, but Terminal 4 has the greatest number of these facilities. There are banks, ATMs, courier services and post offices in Terminals 3 and 4. Business facilities like conference rooms, fax and internet services are available in the Hanseatic Conference Centre in Terminal 4’s departure area.

The airport is equipped to allow disabled persons access to washrooms, ramps, parking spaces, and other facilities. Disabled guests may request assistance by calling (040) 5075 3353.

The Hamburg Airport can easily be accessed from Central Hamburg. The airport is connected to the A7 feeder road through the Schnelsen-Nord exit. From A7, go in the direction of Schleswig-Holstein and Niedersachsen, and then exit at Schnelsen-Nord. If you are coming from Mecklenburg-Vorpmmern, take A1 and exit at Horn in A24. Allow extra time for traffic when going to the airport. Short-term and long-term car parks are available.

You can also go to the airport by bus. An Airport Express bus travels every 15 minutes from the airport to the Hamburg train station and vice versa. This service is available from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. From 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., the bus leaves every 20 minutes.

The airport is not directly connected to the railway station. Ohlsdorf Station is the station nearest to Hamburg Airport. Bus 110 travels from the airport to Ohlsdorf Station. Also, a railway project is underway to connect the airport to the city center.

The Ibis Hamburg Airport Hotel is only eight hundred metres from the airport itself. There is also the Mercure Hamburg Airport Hotel which is some 3 kms from the terminal. Both are excellent. There are numerous other types of accommodation available in the area.

For transportation from the airport, you can take buses and taxis. There are lots of taxis outside the terminal. Limousine services are also available.
