The city is located close to the west coast in Selangor Province. The city’s most famous landmark, the Petronas Towers, stand above the city’s skyline and offer superb views of the city and the downtown district.
Surrounding the Petronas Towers are the main shopping and hotel districts known as the Golden Triangle. Nearby is the popular Merdeka Square with its many museums, galleries and cafés. Just a few hundred meters from Merdeka Square is the bustling Chinatown area, famous for its night markets and food hawkers. For good Malay Indian food, pay a visit to Little India.
Just west of the downtown area is a huge park, which boasts a large lake. It’s a lovely place to relax, wander around and hire a paddle boat on the lake. The park is the home of Bird Park; a giant walk-in aviary with more than 160 different types of birds native to Southeast Asia.
Just on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur is the massive Batu Caves. This makes a wonderful day trip from the city and is a great place to visit especially during a Hindu festival. For those arriving on cheap flights to Malaysia, it’s easy to arrange car hire from Kuala Lumpur’s KLIA airport.
