The airport is located about two miles east of Hilo and has a primary runway that is used by most carriers. Other operations, such as helicopter tours, fixed wing tours, flight training and general aviation use the secondary, crosswind runway. There is one passenger terminal.

Close to the passenger terminal is a cell phone parking lot, while Ampco Parking provides additional parking areas. The rate is $1.00 per thirty minutes, with no charge for dropping-off and picking-up of passengers within ten minutes. Nine car rental companies offer rental cars and Harpers Company has rental trucks. Free shuttles to the car rental agencies are available off Highway 11, past Pohaku Street, close to the Intersection of Highway 11 and Highway18. No shuttles or buses operate to the hotels, but taxis are abundant, with thirteen cab companies vying for trade.

Hilo Airport offers banks, a business center and telephones, including TTY and handicap accessible facilities and lounges, but there are no postal services. Four hotels are located less than five miles from the airport, which has a restaurant, coffee shop, lounge, gift shop, newsstand and two shops selling Leis and Haku Leis.

Interisland arrivals service counters are open 6:00am-10:30pm. The central departures counter does not always have staff, but is open between 6:00am and 8:00pm. There are courtesy phones at the service counters and between 6:00am and 10:30pm passengers can use them to gain assistance.
