Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, which serves Istanbul, was named after the first Turkish woman ever to fly a military aircraft.
The reason for constructing this airport was to ease congestion at Ataturk International Airport, following a rapid increase in air traffic there.
Every year the airport handles around 3.5million passengers, of which 3million are international and the remainder domestic.
Directions:
To get to the airport from Istanbul city centre, take the E-5 or E-6 express highways. On either of these roads, take the Pendik/Kurtkoy exit and follow the airport signs.
Terminals:
There are two passenger terminals at Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, the domestic and the international.
The international terminal occupies an area of 20,000sqm, spread over two floors and there are lounges, shopping and catering outlets.
The domestic traffic terminal covers some 2,000sqm.
There is also a cargo terminal, which has an annual capacity of 90,000 tonnes and 18 cold-storage facilities.
Transport to and from Sabiha Gökçen International Airport:
Buses and taxis operate to and from the airport and car hire services are available.
Parking:
There are both short and long term car parks located right outside the terminals.
Accommodation:
The airport lacks any form of on-site accommodation, but there are numerous hotels to choose from in Istanbul.
Facilities:
Some of the facilities available at Sabiha Gokcen International Airport include VIP lounges, CIP lounges, catering outlets, a bank, car hire services and duty-free outlets.
