British Airways has said that it intends to proceed with the launch of transatlantic services from London City Airport later this year, despite the current economic climate.
Tickets will go on sale on 23 June for flights from 29 September.
The new BA all-business class service will see a daily return flight to JFK, with the exception of Saturdays, when the London City airport is closed. Service will increase to twice daily from the middle of October.
Lead-in leisure fares are offered at the weekend from £1,901.10 return, and weekday business fares are priced from £4,912.10 to £5,625.10.
The carrier will deploy specially-configured Airbus A318s on the routes, which is the largest aircraft that the Docklands airport can accommodate.
Just 32 seats are featured on the plane, all of which convert to fully-flat beds. Flights will stop for refuelling and US customs and immigration clearance at Shannon airport in Ireland, before heading across the Atlantic.
The service from New York will be non-stop, as the aircraft will have sufficient fuel for the return transatlantic crossing.
Willie Walsh, the British Airways chief executive, said: “In the harshest trading environment airlines have experienced, we believe it is more important than ever to embrace the future and innovate. That is what this historic new route is all about.”
