Would be drug trafficker, student Fidelis Ozouli, risked his life trying to hide 1kg of cocaine by swallowing 67 packages of the class A substance in his stomach.

Ozouli, 30, claimed he did not know that the packages contained drugs.

Customs officials at Manchester Airport had become suspicious because his stomach appeared abnormally bloated.

X-ray’s on his stomach revealed a quantity of cocaine equivalent to two bags of sugar – one of the largest amounts ever found internally by customs officers in the UK.

It is estimated that the drug, concealed in condoms, was 78 percent pure with a street value of around £250,000.

Ozouli claims that he didn’t know they were drugs, and he believed he had swallowed something else to take into Britain as a favour for a friend.

The Nigerian born, Ozouli, pleaded guilty to importing class A substances and was jailed for ten years, however continued to deny knowledge of what the contents were.

Judge Thomas Gilbart QC said he did not accept his evidence and did not believe it is fanatical, describing the story as fantastical.

Ozouli, who resides in Kennington, South London, was stopped by UK Border Agency as he arrived at Manchester from Switzerland on September 5.

He said that he had been on a business trip to Zurich on behalf on a pharmaceuticals company but investigations revealed that he had taken an unusual route back to the UK via Africa.

Ozouli was arrested and the case was given to customs officers who interviewed him before he was taken to hospital where he was X-rayed to ensure all the packages containing the Class-A substance were retrieved.
