Scotland-based low-cost airline Flyglobespan will launch three new winter routes to destinations in the sun from Aberdeen Airport, according to a report in The Press & Journal.

In December, the no-frills carrier will operate flights to the popular Sharm el Sheikh resort in Egypt, and also to the resorts of Gran Canaria and Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.

The airline’s announcement about the new services has come just days after Flybe, a no-frills rival, revealed its planned expansion of service from Aberdeen.

Flybe will be adding four or five aircraft at its Aberdeen gateway to handle the new services, but Flyglobespan is planning on only a single additional plane to meet its needs.

Flyglobespan has a strong presence at Aberdeen already, due to its service to the popular resort destination Tenerife, and strengthened further by upcoming services to Spain’s Ibize and Dalaman, Turkey.

In his comments on the new services from Aberdeen, the budget carrier’s chief executive, Rick Green, said: “Both Egypt and the Canaries offer a wide range of facilities including fantastic beaches, great golf courses, world-class hotels and resorts and of course a very appealing climate.

“Sharm el Sheikh, of course, has the added benefit of offering one of the world’s best sites for diving, as well as an exotic culture.”
