Heathrow expansion necessary, says British Airways boss
Posted on: July 11th, 2008 by Lucy ReesExpansion at London’s Heathrow International Airport is vital if the facility is to compete as a significant international air hub, says Willie Walsh, chief executive of British Airways.
Friday during a press conference at Heathrow airport Walsh explained: “We are considerably behind other main air hubs, especially in the Middle East.
“Heathrow airport could be much more efficient as soon as additional runway capacity would be realised. Currently the airport’s two runways are effectively occupied all day. Even insignificant weather condition problems impact and due to these circumstances we are Europe’s most delay prone airport.
“An additional runway would improve things from a reliability point of view and allow us to expand.”
Willie Walsh, who resides in Twickenham, noted London Heathrow airport is the international hub air travel facility for the United Kingdom and it is necessary to expand into rapidly emerging markets such as China.
“It is a highly important issue, not only for the south-east and our capital city, but the entire British economy.”
