Germany’s leading airline, Lufthansa, has revealed that it will be increasing fuel surcharges on most of its passenger flights due to rising oil prices.
Passengers will pay an additional €3, meaning that the surcharge on domestic flights, flights within Europe, to North Africa, Israel, Jordan and Lebanon will be €24, according to a Lufthansa statement.
Bookings from 2 July will reflect the higher charges, the statement went on to say.
The carrier explained: “Prices of crude oil have risen by more than 50% since December 2009, resulting in higher fuel procurement costs.”
On other inter-continental services, surcharges that are currently €82 will vary by destination, it added. The highest surcharge, of €92, would be levied on flights to Central and South America, East Asia, and Sub-Saharan and West Africa.
Flights to the Middle East and East Africa would see a reduction, however, to €77.
According to the airline, it raised it forecast for fuel costs from €3.4 billion to €3.55 billion for the year. Last week, Lufthansa warned that operating costs would have to be reduced further in order to achieve a profit this year, due to the increase in fuel costs and the continued decline in passenger numbers.
