A mother is upset that her 8-year-old daughter, who was travelling unaccompanied on Continental Airlines, was put on the wrong flight, and blames the airline’s “total incompetence and a lack of caring” for the mix-up.

On Wednesday, Wendy Babineaux said that she was “getting the run-around” from the carrier as she tried to understand how her young daughter, flying on Continental from its Houston base, could have ended up in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She was scheduled to fly to Charlotte, North Carolina, to visit her father.

On the following day, 10-year-old Miriam Kamens, also an unaccompanied passenger, ended up in Newark, New Jersey, while flying on the same airline contracted by Continental – ExpressJet. She was meant to be traveling from Boston to see her grandparents in Cleveland, Ohio.

Both families had been charged a $75 unaccompanied minor fee for providing the service.

Babineaux, who lives north-west of Houston in the Bryan-College Station area, commented: “That they did this with my child and turned around the next day and did it with another child shows they do have major problems.”

According to Continental, in both cases the intended flight and a second flight were departing simultaneously from one door, and that miscommunication among staff must have caused the children to be placed on the wrong flights.

Kelly Cripe, a spokeswoman for Continental, said: “We’re reviewing the entire situation and are focused on reinforcing our procedures with our employees,” adding: “We fly thousands of unaccompanied minors every year and the procedures work when followed.”
